Industrial design sample article from National Geographic, July 2009
Use the attached assignment and class photograph, create multiple pencil drawings of individual face features (left eye, right eye, both eyes together, nose, mouth, etc). Use the black and white photos of class member models then trade around photo's to draw other features to see differences. Draw on one side of the paper, ok to use one page for each feature (eye, mouth etc). Please do not concentrate on full face line up, this assignment is intended to have you try different views for comparison, etc. Make outline and shaded drawings separately. Put the model's name near the drawing. Have fun. thank you.
Draw that chicken! In class observation and creativty assignment. Using the gumball toy hens, pencil and kneaded eraser, set up your still life: View angles, make decisions on composition (how much to include and where), put in shadows and horizon line, set a mood, draw a scene or find an expression, change the angle and do another drawing. Have fun.
This copyrighted work of Chris Van Allsburg is here for your visual reference at home, etc. The purchased portfolio prints are in Rm 221, you may view them at any time.
Contour Shell drawing, please read "Making your Mark", from Sierra Club Guide to Sketching in Nature, by Cathy Johnson, 1991
class assignment and notes
Sample: Remember to squint to see the brightest highlight shapes and not detail. Find the darkest shadows, lightly outline both. Practice bringing your lines and fill tones to a clean edge. Use kneaded eraser or stump to make lighter lines recede and to blend shadow shapes...not sure? try it again remember to use observation to compare what you see and draw :)
Holding pencils and making marks, practice exercises.
Please note samples of lines made by contour hatching, cross-hatching, lines and leaving white space. Plese read descriptions of technique and try samples of each.
